Saint Petersburg is one of the most attractive tourist centers of the world. The interest to city is caused, first of all, by cultural and historical riches, quality and culture of services, abundance and variety of elements of tourist service, hospitality of its inhabitants. The UNESCO has entered the historical center of St Petersburg and its delightful suburbs in the List of the world heritage.

The tourism in the Northern capital is a steadily developing and highly efficient branch of the city economy. At present time more than 3000 firms in St. Petersburg are involved in tourism. They organize a comfortable stay for the visitors of the city and offer a wide range of services.

There are more than 500 establishments for accommodation of tourists in St Petersburg. Among them there are about 450 hotels of different classes. The rest of them are recreation centers, houses for guests, youth centers, student’s hostels, children's camps and health resorts. Already for several years St Petersburg is considered as one of the three European leaders in attendance of cruise ships.

There are more than 600 restaurants in the city, where you will find everything – from classical Russian cuisine to exotic food from Australia. The entertainment services also continue to extend: night clubs, casinos, discos. At the same time the network of cafes and fast food restaurants is growing.

About 2 thousand thematic excursions practically in all foreign languages are conducted annually in the city on Neva. Every year more than 20 international festivals of arts, about 80 music and theatre festivals, competitions, hundreds of exhibitions and premieres take place here. The amateurs of chamber music may enjoy the best pieces of classical music which sounds in historical interiors of St Petersburg palaces.

The city has and constantly increases experience of carrying out the largest sports competitions and forums. Among them – Good-will games, Catty Sark regatta, annual Formula-I water races, the largest competitions in figure skating, gymnastics, athletics, the Ice hockey World championship of 2000.

St Petersburg (according to the UN) takes the eighth place in the rating of popularity among the largest international centers of tourism (leaving behind Prague, Vienna, Munich, etc.).
