St. Petersburg is dotted with numerous churches, cathedrals and monasteries, beautiful buildings likely to witness the magnificence of the city.
St. Peter and Paul fortress. Built by Peter the Great in 1703 and designed by Domenico Trezzini, in the center it houses the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, in Dutch-style and with basilica plan with a central dome.
Kazan Cathedral. Built in 1811, it is located in the heart of the Nevsky Prospect. The arcade consists of 144 columns in a semicircle. At its Inside is kept one of the most venerated icons by the Russians, the Our Lady of Kazan one.
St. Nicholas Cathedral. Built in 1762, with its golden domes and the Baroque spire it is one of the most popular churches in St. Petersburg. It contains many icons of the eighteenth century and a beautiful carved wooden iconostasis.
The Nevsky Monastery. Built by Peter the Great in 1710, the complex looks like a real fortress, which contains seven churches and three cemeteries. The imposing Cathedral of the Trinity, in classic style, is the most important and magnificent one.
