The Nevsky Prospect (The Neva Avenue) is the main road through the city of St. Petersburg and it is probably the most famous street of the whole Russia. Gogol, the famous 800’s Ukrainian writer, had defined it as “the universal point of confluence of Petersburg”.
It develops along a path that is about 4.5 km, starting from the Palace Square and reaching up to the Alexander Nevsky Monastery, the Russian prince of the thirteenth century, famous for his epic military exploits. The route provides a view of the Winter Palace, the General Staff, the Admiralty, the Kazan Cathedral, Aničkov Palace, the Ploshchad' Vosstanija (square overlooked by the railway station Moskovskij).
The Nevsky Prospect was commissioned by Tsar Peter the Great, whose intention was to connect the city directly with the capital. In 1737 a special commission decreed it development, which occurred within 150 years, modeled on the Champs-Elysees in Paris. In this period the nobility built many palaces of admirable magnificence.
Therefore the street, which crosses some of the St. Petersburg channels, offers a very interesting overview on the Russian architecture evolution over the centuries.
The best way to enjoy this beautiful stretch of cultural history is certainly to stay at one of the Nevsky Hotels, benefiting an unforgettable vacation.
