What to see in St Petersburg

Today, the city is one of the major artistic and cultural centres of Europe, thanks to its literary tradition and its extremely rich artistic heritage. The historical centre contains within it many sumptuous treasures of the imperial period, architectures, monuments and museums famous all around the world. Since 1990, it has been included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.

The tourist heart of St. Petersburg is the pedestrian precinct located behind the Winter Palace and the Admiralty, on the south shore, where the main road called "Nevsky Prospect" is situated.

Among the many beauties of the city, you cannot miss a visit to the well-known Hermitage Museum, the Pushkin Museum, St. Isaac's Cathedral, Peter and Paul Fortress, the beautiful Summer Garden Park, the Museum of Decorative and Applied Arts, the Russian Museum and the palaces of Petrodvorets.

During the last 10 days of June, you can attend the striking White Nights, so named for the fact that at night the darkness never falls completely on the city. On the occasion of these evenings you can attend cultural events such as the White Nights Festival of Dance and various celebrations.

The average winter temperature in St. Petersburg is -8 ° C, with peaks of -15 ° C and frequent snowfalls. The summer is cool and warmer between June and August, when it reaches 20 ° C. In this period the city is particularly populated by both Russian and foreign tourists. The Russian language, which may seem an obstacle for those who stay in Russia, is surmountable for those who have some knowledge of English or other European languages fairly common among the inhabitants, especially in the city centre.

To get about in St. Petersburg the underground is the fastest and most efficient means of transport, thanks to its four lines. Alternatively, you can get around the city using its surface transport services, namely: buses, trolleybuses, trams and characteristic marshrutka, a taxi service much appreciated by locals.
